Thirty-five years ago, Hello Kitty was a character designed in Japan and first appeared in a vinyl coin purse. Thirty-five years later, this gentle-looking female white cat with a red ribbon and no drawn mouth has been a part of practically every girl’s life; not only appearing on TV as a cartoon character but also used as a design for handbags, greeting cards, various school supplies, clothes, jewelry, tattoos, and almost anything imaginable.

Here are some of the most surprisingly amazing Hello Kitty merchandises that have come up through the years.

Hello Kitty may still be a girl’s favorite icon but this little cat has come a long way from a simple vinyl purse to being Japan’s tourism ambassador to China and Hong Kong. UNICEF also awarded Hello Kitty the exclusive title of UNICEF Special Friend of Children. Who knows what Hello Kitty would be in thirty-five years from now. It would not be a surprise if someone put her up in space.

All in all, Hello Kitty’s humble beginnings and global fame prove that a little imagination could go a long way.
