Recreating Dorothy’s Red Shoes November 3, 2009

Dorothy shoesWho would have not noticed those strikingly bright red shoes?  Dubbed as “the most iconic shoes in movie history”, Dorothy’s red shoes were recreated by today’s top designers to celebrate the 70th anniversary of “The Wizard of Oz” and brought possible by Warner Bros. Consumer Products and CRYSTALLIZED™ – Swarovski Elements. The online auction happened in September and was open to every bidder in the world to benefit the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. The materials varied from embossed leather to silk; the styles ranged from stilettos to ballet flats. Still, each shoe design retained the spark and brightness of the original shoes through glittering Swarovski crystals.

It might be too late to bid now but it is still great to see the shoes those 19 selected designers came up with. Among the designers were Christian Louboutin, Manolo Blahnik, Jimmy Choo, Betsey Johnson, Diane von Furstenberg, and Oscar de la Renta.  All designs are  fun and charming but the winner for me is the classy and sleek design by Oscar de la Renta.
